Our client seeks an experienced In-House Insurance Claims Counsel to join the corporate legal department situated in uptown Charlotte. Our client company boasts a unique structure encompassing multiple carrier groups of property/casualty insurance companies, serving a diverse array of commercial, personal, admitted, and surplus lines insurance across the nation. With offices in multiple locations, our privately-owned company holds an "A-" rating by A.M. Best, reflecting our commitment to excellence in the insurance industry.
Role Overview: As part of the Legal/Compliance Department, this role reports to the General Counsel and is exclusively dedicated to our claims function. The primary responsibilities include providing comprehensive legal support to our claims department, managing all claims litigation, overseeing external claims counsel, analyzing claims litigation data and trends, developing optimization strategies, and identifying and mitigating emerging risks.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a wide variety of legal services exclusively to the claims department.
  • Coordinate and manage all claims litigation matters.
  • Oversee and manage external legal claims counsel (defense and coverage).
  • Participate in claims-focused working groups for special projects.
  • Collaborate with external TPA firms and other company partners.
  • Gather, analyze, and report aggregated data and information on claims litigation.
  • Develop and implement strategies for claims litigation optimization.
  • Identify and mitigate emerging risks.
  • Maintain appropriate files and perform legal research.
  • Interact with various company departments and colleagues.
  • Handle multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ensure meticulous attention to detail and quality in drafting and communication.
  • Uphold standards of discretion, confidentiality, ethics, and fair/proper behavior.
  • Utilize strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree and at least one active state bar admission, preferably Texas or North Carolina.
  • 5 years of insurance claims (defense) litigation experience, either in-house at an insurance company, in-house at a third-party claims administrator, and/or as external law firm claims (defense) counsel to insurance companies.
