Role Overview:
The Senior Vice President of Underwriting and Business Development – Eastern Division will be responsible for driving strategic expansion of the property insurance portfolio. This executive-level role focuses on underwriting leadership, broker and reinsurer relationships, and execution of growth-oriented initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in the MGA space, deep understanding of reinsurance structures, and a proven track record of driving a profitable property business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead underwriting and business development strategy across the Eastern Division.
- Grow and manage a profitable book of property insurance business, with emphasis on Shared & Layered placements.
- Structure facultative reinsurance programs to deliver a net position to Amherst Specialty Insurance Company.
- Build and lead high-performing underwriting teams; establish underwriting guidelines and risk selection standards.
- Develop and strengthen relationships with wholesale and facultative brokers, fronting carriers, and reinsurers.
- Source new business opportunities and distribution channels.
- Partner with actuarial and analytics teams to drive data-informed underwriting decisions.
- Negotiate fronting arrangements and reinsurance treaties.
- Contribute to the design and deployment of an advanced underwriting platform for risk modeling and data capture.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and oversee due diligence with carrier and reinsurance partners.
- Represent the organization at key industry events, carrier meetings, and conferences.
- Mentor junior underwriting and support staff to develop internal talent and reinforce underwriting discipline.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 15 years of experience in property insurance—MGA, carrier underwriting, or broking (facultative, wholesale, or retail).
- Expertise in MGA operations, reinsurance structures, and fronting relationships.
- Strong knowledge of natural catastrophe modeling and per-risk rating methodologies.
- Demonstrated success in developing and scaling underwriting programs.
- Proven leadership in underwriting strategy, distribution, and portfolio management.
- Skilled negotiator with experience structuring complex insurance and reinsurance programs.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to drive execution and measurable results.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in insurance, risk management, finance, or related discipline (MBA or CPCU preferred).
